or Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the CNS. Damages the protective sheath of nerve fibers (myelin), adversely affecting the motor function, sensation, balance and even the word, vision and bladder control.
usually appears between 20 and 40. It most often affects females than in males. The disease is not hereditary, not contagious and is not preventable or curable.
Demyelination can affect different areas of the CNS and this is the cause of the variability and multiplicity of symptoms.
SYMPTOMS Symptoms include weakness, tingling, poor coordination, fatigue, balance problems, visual disturbances, tremor, spasticity or muscle stiffness, slurred speech (dysarthria), bowel or urinary problems (urgency / incontinence), unsteady gait (ataxia), function problems sexual heat sensitivity, problems with short-term memory, and occasionally trial or reasoning problems.
EVOLUTION There
different forms of the disease:
relapsing-remitting MS: defined by presence of flares (periods of exacerbation) with subsequent recovery complete or partial.
Primary progressive MS, progressive disease from the start, with possibility of parking at times even spontaneous improvement.
Secondary progressive MS: initially is relapsing-remitting form followed by progression with or without relapses.
appellant Progressive MS: progressive disease from onset with clear relapses with or without complete recovery periods between outbreaks characterized by a steady progression.
FORECAST
very difficult to predict the medium and long-term course of the disease.
In a small percentage of patients after a first manifestation, the disease can remain silent for a long time and even for life.
Approximately one third of cases, MS has a benign course, in another third, it causes significant disability but do not compromise the autonomy of the person in AVD.
Only the remaining third of patients is affected by forms of such gravity that severely limit their autonomy.
